Black tea from Shawlands Tea Estate
Shawlands Tea Estate lies on the southern slopes of Madulsima hill range, within the altitude range of 792 m to 1,173 m above the mean sea level.
Tea has a quite long, unbroken leaf of light brown colour and strong spicy pepper-like aroma. Bright red-brown in a cup, full of brisk and dynamic flavor with tones of citrus, resin, cinamon, mint and a frozen rosehip. Long citrus-like astringent aftertaste.
Preparation: Allow 4 teaspoons (15 g) of tea for 1l of boiled water, let it steep for 2 - 3 minutes.
Shawlands Tea Estate
Shawlands estate is found on the southern slopes of Madulsima hill range, within the altitude range of 792 m to 1,173 m above the mean sea level and produces teas categorized under Uva medium tea of Sri Lanka.
The estate was established in 1880 and grows 262 ha of tea, 55 ha of rubber and 113 ha of forest plantations. Shawlands estate produces around 3 million kg of green tea leaves and 9,000 kg of rubber latex annually from the fields which are certified by Rainforest Alliance.
The tea factory, constructed in 1930 has undergone several renovations to meet the international standards in food manufacturing and now operates under Rainforest Alliance, ISO 22000 and CQC standards. The factory manufactures 700,000 kg of orthodox black tea annually using the tea leaves picked from its own garden and sister estates in the group.
